Hunting Island, SC

We left Thursday morning for Hunting Island State Park, about 250 miles from Myrtle Beach.

Kathy had made reservations at Hunting Island several months in advance. You may not know this but Hunting Island is the most popular State Park in South Carolina and you might find it hard to reserve a space so think ahead about booking. Currently, the camping area of the Park is still suffering from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew and then the additional damage Tropical Storm Irma inflicted. The Park actually stayed closed for 7 months and part of it will not reopen due to the irreparable damage it received.

We stayed on site #148, which was very close to the Campground

Store. The Store was the only area the Park offered Wi-Fi service. To our surprise we were able to enjoy Wi-Fi from our site. We also had great satellite reception on the Wally.

On our first day we just setup camp and fixed dinner in Bobby's Man Cave (excuse me...the Hi Ho).

Friday, May 4, we got up early and Kathy fixed Breakfast. After cleaning everything up Kathy and Michael drove the scooters to the main part of the State Park where the Lighthouse is. They told me this part of the Park was beautiful and very much had the look

of The Land Before Time

The Lighthouse was built in 1859 and dismantled in 1933.

They didn't climb the 167 steps to the top.

Now this was the longest scooter ride Kathy had taken and she was a bit nervous with cars passing her (you would never know she was so frazzled by the beautiful picture Michael took of her - LOL).

So, after this leg of the jaunt they came back to the Hi Ho for a break. After their short break they scooted back past the Lighthouse entrance and on to the Nature Center, which is

right next to Fripp Island where they thought they might be able to grab some lunch. As it turns out Fripp Island is more than just a "Resort" it is a private island and you have to be living or staying there to get in. Sooooo, they ran back to the Hi Ho and got the truck and drove to Beaufort to get a feel for where things would be taking place on Saturday at the Taste of Beaufort Festival. On the way back they stopped at the Foolish Frog in St. Helena

for a very late lunch of fried shrimp, oysters, hushpuppies and fries. It was delish they said. Kathy even had a Cosmo. There was a couple of Beaufort locals who drove 25 miles to eat at the Foolish Frog. They said they loved the place and had the best fried okra in the area. They also ordered Fried Frog Legs and offered a taste to them. Now you always hear folks say... it taste like chicken but this couple said it tasted better than chicken. Michael said he it was okay but he was glad he didn't have to pay $14.00 to find out what they tasted like and they both pretty much agreed frog legs were not something they would order again. Not bad but not that good either.

Since lunch was so late they decided not to cook dinner that night.

Saturday morning Kathy and Michael left for Beaufort. The Produce Market had been highly recommended as a breakfast venue. Kathy thought her Country Ham Eggs Benedict over Grit Cakes was great but Michael was disappointed in his.

After breakfast Kathy and Michael walked down to the Festival. The craft show portion was open early and Music started around 10 a.m. and the tasting protion started at 11:00. Music was by The Madhatters of Savanna. They played good old Rock "N" Roll from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Michael had a great time dancing with some strange people. Not strange like Michael but strange as in "STRANGer".

Those of you who know Michael know he doesn't drink and he doesn't know any strangers. He was having good ole time.

It was really kind of dumb on their part to have eaten breakfast when they were going to a food festival. Even though the food looked and smelled just wonderful all they had room for was a pulled pork slider and a cup of white chocolate banana pudding that they shared.

If you go to Beaufort, SC be sure and go to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. It is a really lovely park sitting on the Beaufort River with views of the Woods Memorial Bridge (which was named for State Highway Patrolman, Richard Woods, who was killed in the line of duty. The bridge is inscribed “Dedicated in 1971 to the memory of State Highway Patrolman R.V. Woods (1935-1969) and all other South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers who died while serving in the line of duty.” The bridge is beautiful but one Kathy will most likely never scoot across.

After walking around downtown Beaufort for a bit Kathy and Michael came on back to the campsite and that evening Kathy fixed Spaghetti with sauce she made ahead and brought along.

Sunday morning we broke camp and headed back to Myrtle Beach.

It was a great long weekend together.

Our next trip will be in June when we travel the back roads to Lake Greenwood State Park in Ninety Six, South Carolina.

So until then... Hi Ho "Silver" Away.
